Equator Village Maldive Island
The Maldives Review Rating:
(3 Stars)
A very different maldives experience
Addu Atoll is unlike the rest of the maldives. All the islands are connected by bridges and Gan, the largest island, is over 5km long.
A large native population gives visitors an excellent opportunity to meet the local people. This is unusual for the maldives where the locals and tourists are usually kept very seperate.
Gan Island was actually a Britaish RAF base during the second world war and right up untill the 1970s. There is even a small war memorial on the Island of Gan and Brits should make the minimal effort to visit it if they come to Equator Village.
The other british item worth viewing takes a little more effort, but is very rewarding. The cargo ship British Loyalty was Torpedoed by the Japanese in WW2 and its wreck lies inside the atoll at Maradhoo Island. This is one of the best wreck dives in the Maldives.
Back on shore, the village has 78 well furnished rooms, a large swimming pool with a pool bar. The food is very high quality and the staff are friendly and polite. Activities include scuba diving, catamaran sailing, windsurfing and snorkeling, tennis, squash, volleyball, darts, billiards and table tennis.

Reviews of Equator Village
The cargo ship is amazing. The whole thing is pretty eerie, but brilliant too. Drop down at the bow and head along the ridge for maximum wildlife.
Useful Review
Equator Village is on Gan which was an RAF base till 1976. There are both positives and negatives to this. The negative is that some of the old military huts are in use amongst the facilities to tourists and quite frankly, corrugated iron does not cut it when you were expecting something more luxurious. On the other hand, Gan is so much larger than the typical maldivian islands and has a military wreck (a cargo vessel called British Loyalty)close by for scuba divers.
confused
can someone actually write a review that is usefull?
Not really on the equator
I got told it is actually a few miles off the equator.
The flight was horrid
One Star for the flight to Male which was sheer hell. Tiny cramped seats and bad food, bad air, bad staff. Monarch must do better.
water doesn't spin
When you drain a sink here it just goes down without spinning.
