Meedhupparu Maldive Island

The Maldives Review Rating: maldives star rating maldives star rating maldives star rating maldives star rating (4 Stars)

maldives photoA lovely place to spend a couple of weeks. The diving was hard work though. Drift dives only and strong currents too. However, the island of Meedhupparu won my heart and has much to recommend it.

The accomodation on Meedhupparu is of a high standard and the lack of mosquitos a true blessing. There is a health spa at one end of the island, but the poolside bar is where most people get their relaxation therapy.

Meedhupparu really is a slice of paradise, but they have a little problem with erosion on one side of the island, so 1 villa has a bit of a concrete wall around it.

The new water villas are of exceptional quality. You can snorkel out over the reefs directly from your private balcony. This is a real delight in the morning and late at night.

The food is really very good and the wine list is reasonable too. Overall, Meddhupparu is pretty lovely. Meedhupparu Island Resort holidays are not the most expensive but not the cheapest. They sit in the middle, offering something for everyone. Although plenty of Brits and Scandinavians come here, this island sometimes feels like an Italian enclave.

Number of Rooms: 140

Best ever

After 25 years of marrage, 30 years service with HM force never have Mary and I enjoyed and relaxed so much. I can only fully endorce all the positive comments said about this most fab resort. Typically for our 7 day all-in package staying in one of the land based bungalows its fair to say: the beer was cold, food great, service outstanding, everything we expected and more. Go on take the plunge. Typically prices vary as identified on location but we both think we were well and truely looked after throughout.

Water bungalow tip

The water bungalows are amazing and definitely a must...but what you must do is book them in advance. If you decide to upgrade once you get there, the charges can be crippling. Just 3 days in the water bungalows can add an extra £1000 to your holiday and you also cease to be eligible for all inclusive options...despite having already paid for them.

Meedhupparu

We have only just returned from the island. I have to say that overall this was one of the most impressive holidays i have ever had. The island was amazing, fabulous beaches, amazing fish to snorkel with. The hotel staff were friendly but left you alone and never hounded you for tips. The food was OK, but nothing special and rather repetative. plenty to choose from although Curry for breakfast is certainly not for me! The weather for the two weeeks was excellent and when it did rain it didn't rain for very long and was never cold. The rooms were cleaned twice a day and to a good standard On the minus side of things, the room was good, clean and of a reasonable size but our room (245) suffered from the largest spiders i have ever seen within it. We had three within 2 days and were larger than a fist. we also had cockroaches within the room and neighbours who liked to argue (and you hear every word too) We also found that all inclusive didn't actually mean that (no fault of the resort though), Cocktails were extra as was any drinks drunk after midnight. The mini bar was also extra and expensive. Please don't be put off, the island and hotla i thought was excellent, my only tip for you all is if you want a holiday where the only decision you want to make is whether to go to the beach or the pool. Or whether to go to the pool bar or normal one. The island has not much else to offer, so really does make you to relax. Bring plenty of books you'll need them I won't go back to this hotel, but i'll certainly be going back to the Maldives that are truely paradise.

Second hand review

Chris and Tracey have now told me all about their honeymoon. The highlight was the upgrade to the water bungalows. What they said was you got a personal butler who is on hand to fetch you drinks and generally cater to your meerest whim. Breakfast was brought to the bungalow and was a real feast with lots of lovely fresh tropical fruits as well as coffee, bread eggs etc. The waterbungalow was "all I imagined a perfect holiday to be" said Tracey.

Russians!

Nic just got off the phone with her brother Chris who has just flown in from Meedhupparu. So far all we have learned is that they stayed in one of the new water bungalows and that the island was full of Russians. Once Chris and Tracey have recovered from the jet lag we will demand a full report.

Bottle of Bintang Anybody?

Bintang beer from Sri Lanka is a real find. Perfect ice cold refreshment with more flavour than most lagers.

Sorry Forgot to mention the Fruit Bats! wow we had fun watching them in the early eve .. but watch out where they are in the air as they are not fussy where they poo! The sandy Beaches are to die for with sun loungers all along the beach. We made some life long friends out there, everyone we met holiday maker wise were lovely, we really dont have a bad word to say about anyone or anything!

Honeymoon Heaven

What can i say ... Heaven on earth wouldn't even come close, we had a wicked honeymoon/holiday. The staff really couldn't do any more to help, they were fantastic throughout the holiday, the rooms were cleaned twice daily with little finishing touches that were lovely even down to the toilet roll!! The food was second to none in the main resturant which was a buffet style. Yes there is a lot of fish dishes but they also have a variety of other meals to please everyone. My hubby certainly liked the variety of desserts (having 3/4 helpings at a time!!) needless to say we thought he might need a sea plane to himself on the return flight back to Male!! Many thanks to our fav chef Guru who looked after us for our special meal needs. We would recomend to anyone planning to visit the island to walk up the jetty at night to watch the feeding of the fish! (about 9:30pm local time) where you will be amazed by the size of the fish that come out to feed at night! Jack fish and some nights Sharks! there are also Sting rays and sea turtles too, some people were lucky enough to see dolphins. We will be back as soon as my hubby has paid for the wedding!!!! Enjoy your holiday ... we did and can't wait to get back.

Wow - totally amazing!

I cannot express how brilliant Meedhupparu was. This was my best holiday ever. You can snorkel with rainbow coloured fishes all day and party all night (well till about 2 or 3am when they finally shut the bar down). The islad is beautiful whith lovely ghekkos keeping the insects at bay. I really enjoyed the island and cannot understand the anti-italian sentiments expressed by others. Everyone had a great time and we all made great friends.

Our stay on Meedhupparu

We visited Meedhupparu for our 10th wedding anniversary and had a wonderful time. The weather and location were stunning, as was the sealife that surrounds the island.

The only downside was that the resort seems very geared towards the Italians, with the majority of the entertainment being in Italian. Saying that, we did take part in the crab racing and in an evening of local music and dancing. Beware!! If you steal the limelight from the italians during the show they can get a little narked. Food was of a very good quality, though again geared more towards European tastes. This was a shame as when they did serve local dishes they were delicious (far better than the european alternatives of pasta or meat and two veg). A perfect way to spend a relaxing couple of weeks.

Local island

The trip to the local island is not worth the bother. The place is dull. Stick to Meedhupparu!

Sea Life

B. Davies urges us all to be careful of blue spotted stingrays in the sand at the waters edge. You dont need to worry. They will get out of your way. Far more dangerous are the air taxis which land close to the island and then taxi in to within feet of the shore.

There are unbleached corals around the south pier.

Taxi

The flight from Male was an astounding experience. Get the free earplugs at the airport if you want to hear anything other than a rining noise in your ears during your holiday.

Fruitbats

I thought the fruitbats were great. I really enjoyed watching them fight the crows. There were also stingrays in the water right outside our chalet. The gekkos got inside the chalet and made chirruping noises. I liked listening to them as I fell asleep.

The island is geared more toward the Italian tourists. The food was good quality, especially the curries but it is a shame they didn't offer this option in the evening. The menu was mainly european and it was a bit like a school canteen at times.

I enjoyed the Spa. I had a head massage accompanied by the massager having a chat with her mate throughout it. A bit annoying.

Sea fishing was a good trip.

Ideal holiday for a sun worshiper or a diver but those who prefer something with a bit of variety could find it a bit frstrating for two weeks.

Freediving

There are buoyed and anchored ropes at the end of one of the jetties, allowing you to pull down, arm over arm to about 7 or 8 metres with ease on a lungful of air. By the end of the week I could hang out at the bottom for almost a minute in total silence. This is a great tip for underwater photographs, because you aren't producing bubbles and noise to frighten the fish away.

The Jetty at night is the place to be.

We only discovered this on the last night, but they have lights under the jetty and at night hundreds of fish are attracted to them. An amazing site.

Sunsets

On the opposite side of the island from the dining room and pool, the cafe is the best spot to watch the sunset.

Stingray alert

Be careful of blue spotted stingrays in the sand at the waters edge. I almost trod on one.
